Diagnosis (see Bird and Holdich 1984)

Additions/corrections: antenna six-articled; article-4 with pseudo-suture (‘fusion line’). Mandible molar spines in coronal array. Cheliped palm inferior and superior margins parallel. Pereopods 1–3 basis with superior seta. Preparatory males with four-articled antennule thicker than in female. Swimming male unknown.

Remarks

The addition to the diagnosis corrects a mistake in the original where it was stated ‘antennule [sic] 7-articled’. This should have referred to the antenna, which has a distinct pseudo-suture/fusion line on article-4, as seen in several colletteid genera (inter alia).

Apart from the listed species, an undescribed species of Leptognathioides has been recorded from one of the Japanese trenches ( Bird 2007), as ‘ Leptognathioides sp. KK#1’. The familial status of the genus remains equivocal until a detailed phylogenetic or genetic analysis is performed, but it will probably be the same as that of Portaratrum .
