Culicoides (B.) circumscriptus Kieffer, 1918 View in CoL

( Figs. 4a, b View FIGURE 4 , 5a, b View FIGURE 5 )

Chemical pigmentation ( Figs. 4a View FIGURE 4 , 5a View FIGURE 5 ). Light spots on a dark background. Pigment patterns with clearly defined boundaries. An irregular light patch beginning at the distal end of the sc cell, passing down to the R vein, partially covers distal end of b cell, and R-M crossvein. Cell r2, including distal part of C vein uniformly dark. Two regular light patches in the r3 cell; the proximal one abuts with distal end of C vein and covers the wing edge, the distal one includes the edge of the wing (in male, additionally covering part of the M1 vein). Two light spots in the m1 cell; proximal bright area larger, located between the M1 and M2 veins. Two light patches in the m2 cell; the proximal one larger, located between the M2 and CuA1 veins. One light spot in the cua1 cell covering the edge of the wing. Three light patches in the anal area, the proximal one irregularly arcuately shaped. Apical parts of the M1, M2 and CuA1 veins, and the whole length of CuA2 vein surrounded by brighter bands.

Interference patterns ( Figs. 4b View FIGURE 4 , 5b View FIGURE 5 ). Dominant colours: yellow, navy blue, purple. Structural colours in place of naturally occurring bright spots—yellow starting from the proximal part of the wing to whitish in the distal part. Spots in the r3 cell brighter than others. Interference colours corresponding to the dark pigment on the wings in shades of blue and purple. Venation clearly marked, veins surrounded by pale yellow bands.

Female and male: light markings correspond to WIP yellowish markings.
