Distribution. Western Atlantic—Florida, Mississippi to Texas, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Curaçao and Brazil (Pará to Paraná) ( Christoffersen 1984; Pires et al. 2008).

Ecological notes. In estuaries, on mud, in burrows under rocks, debris, among herbaceous vegetation and roots of Rhizophora mangle , and in rotting wood. Specimens of A. estuariensis were often collected together with unindentified gobiid fishes (Teleostei: Perciformes) and with the alpheid shrimp Salmoneus carvachoi Anker, 2007 , suggesting a possible association. Salinity range: 2–38 psu. Depth range: intertidal to 22 m ( Christoffersen 1984).
