Genus Selenophorus Dejean View in CoL
Selenophorus Dejean 1829: 80 View in CoL . Type species: Carabus palliatus Fabricius, 1798 View in CoL , designated by Hope (1838: 84).
Recognition. This genus includes many species which are markedly diverse in their external features. In the Nearctic region, Selenophorus View in CoL is distinguished by the absence of the following special features found in other selenophorine genera: protibia with five or more stout spines along outer margin near apex ( Discoderus View in CoL ); females with thickening of the apical margin of ventrite 6 ( Discoderus View in CoL ); apical margin of clypeus deeply emarginate ( Amblygnathus View in CoL ); dorsum densely and uniformly punctate ( Athrostictus View in CoL ); pronotum elongate and narrow ( Stenomorphus View in CoL ). The male protarsi and mesotarsi are dilated, each with four tarsomeres biseriately squamulose beneath. The range of sexual dimorphism is treated in the Discussion.
