Subfamily Scapteriscinae Zeuner, 1939 View in CoL

Scapteriscinae Zeuner, 1939: 33 View in CoL . Type genus: Scapteriscus Scudder, 1868 .

Diagnosis. Medium to large mole crickets bearing two protibial dactyls and with a broad, blade-like process developed from the distal part of the protrochanter. In Scapteriscus this process bears a sharpened ventro-apical flange or tooth, which is absent in Indioscaptor , the only other genus in the subfamily.

Comments. Scapteriscinae are unique among extant mole crickets in that they possess only two protibial dactyls. In contrast, all other mole crickets have three ( Triamescaptor ) or four ( Gryllotalpa , Gryllotalpella and Neocurtilla ) protibial dactyls and are normally united in the subfamily Gryllotalpinae .
