Genus Palaeololigo Naef, 1921
Type species
Teuthopsis oblonga Wagner (1859) by subsequent designation (Engeser 1988).
Diagnosis
Gladius vane pear-shaped, about half as broad as long. Posterior end strongly curved. One or more ribs radiate from posterior end. Free rachis shorter than vane.
Remarks
The family and genus names were published by Naef (1921a, b) in two works published in the same year. It is not known which was published first. Naef himself (1922) referred only to Naef (1921b). The question has been discussed by Engeser and Keupp (1999).
Neave (1940) stated that Palaeololigo was a replacement name for Teuthopsis Wagner, 1859 as suggested by Naef’s (1921a) text (see quotation earlier). However, Teuthopsis was in fact an unjustified emendation of Teudopsis Eudes- Deslongchamps, 1835. Wagner (1859, 1860) referred to it without comment as Teuthopsis Deslongchamps , so it is clear that he intended to correct the spelling and not to propose a new name.
