TYPE LOCALITY: India, Bengal .
DISTRIBUTION: Oriental region (except Borneo.and Philippines); north to extreme S.E. Siberia ( U.S. S.R.); formerly in S. Caucasus, Asia Minor , N. Iran, Afghanistan, Bali, and Java.
COMMENT: Type locality fixed by Thomas, 1911, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1911:135. Populations of sondaica (including balica) and virgata probably extinct (AHS). Reviewed by Mazak, 1981, Mamm. Species, 152:1—8.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I (except P. t. altaica ) and U.S. ESA - Endangered as P. tigris .
CITES - Appendix II as P. t. altaica subspecies only.
