TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil, Pernambuco .
DISTRIBUTION: N. Argentina and S. Brazil to Peru, north to Oaxaca ( Mexico) to S. Texas and N.C. Arizona, N. Baja California ( Mexico), S. California, and S.W. and C. New Mexico ( U.S.A.).
COMMENT: Type locality subsequently fixed by Thomas, 1911. Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1911:135. Frequently exhibits melanism (AHS).
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered.
