TYPE LOCALITY: South Africa, Cape Prov., Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain .

DISTRIBUTION: Steppe and savanna from Turkestan and N.W. India to Egypt, Algeria and Morocco; Subsaharan Africa in savanna zones.

COMMENT: Provisionally placed by Werdelin, 1981, Ann. Zool. Fenn., 18:37-71, in genus Caracal ; see also comment under Lynx .

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as Felidae and CITES - Appendix I as Felis caracal, Asian population only.

ISIS NUMBER: 5301412007001005001 as Felis caracal .
