TYPE LOCALITY: Argentina, Buenos Aires .
DISTRIBUTION: S. Brazil to Peru, north to S. Arizona and S. Texas ( U.S.A.).
COMMENT: Herpailurus is considered a valid genus by CPG. First available type locality from Martin, 1833, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1833:3. Two color phases occur (AHS).
