TYPE LOCALITY: Germany .
DISTRIBUTION: Deciduous woodland savanna and steppe from W. Europe to N.W. China and C. India; Morocco to Egypt, south to Sudan, S. Mauritania and Senegal, eastward to Ethiopia, through Subsaharan savannas to the Cape ( South Africa).
COMMENT: This name was placed on the official list by opinion 465 of the ICZN, 1957. Includes libyca , chutuchta, vellerosa and catus (worldwide), which was domesticated from this species; see Corbet, 1978:181. F. s. vellerosa is probably a domestic cat (CPG).
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as Felidae (The domestic cat, Felis catus , is specifically excluded from protection).
