TYPE LOCALITY: China, Szechwan, vicinity of Tongolo and Tatsienlu .

DISTRIBUTION: Dry steppe from the eastern flanks of the Tibetan plateau in C. China north to Inner Mongolia; perhaps to Mongolia.

COMMENT: The distinction between bieti and silvestris is dubious according to Haltenorth, 1953, Die Wildkatzen der alten Welt: eine übersieht über die Untergattung Felis .

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as Felidae .
