COMMENT: Includes Pusa, Histriophoca, and Pagophilus ; see Burns and Fay, 1970, J. Zool. Lond., 161:363-394; Rice, 1977:12- 13; Gromov and Baranova, 1981:297-300; but also see Corbet, 1978:187, and Corbet and Hill, 1980:107, who considered Histriophoca and Pagophilus distinct genera, as did Hall, 1981, who also separated Pusa. MN considers these to be distinct genera, but OLR, DWR, and JEK do not.
