TYPE LOCALITY: U.S.A., Colorado, South Platte River .
DISTRIBUTION: Central North America from C. Alberta ( Canada) to N. W. Texas and E. New Mexico ( U.S.A.).
COMMENT: Placed in subgenus Canis , subgenus Vulpes by Van Gelder, 1978:1- 10. Distinct from macrotis ; see Thornton and Creel, 1975, Texas J. Sci., 26: 127- 136; Rohwer and Kilgore, 1973, Syst. Zool., 22: 157; but also see Hall, 1981:940. Clutton-Brock, et al., 1976, 29(3):117-199, combined velox and macrotis for analysis only. Reviewed by Egoscue, 1979, Mamm. Species, 122:1-5.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered as V. v. hebes subspecies only.
