TYPE LOCALITY: U.S.A., California, Riverside Co., vicinity of Box Springs, within 10 mi. (16 km) S. E of Riverside .
DISTRIBUTION: Western U.S. A, from S. Oregon to Zacatecas ( Mexico) and east to W. Texas and E. New Mexico.
COMMENT: Partly revised by Waithman and Roest, 1977, J. Mammal., 58: 157-164. Distinct from velox ; see Thornton and Creel, 1975, Texas J. Sci., 26:127- 136; and Rohwer and Kilgore, 1973, Syst. Zool., 22:157- 165, who found hybrids between velox and macrotis but concluded they were of reduced viability, and retained both as species; but also see Hall, 1981:940. Clutton-Brock, et al., 1976, 29 (3):1 17- 199, combined velox and macrotis for analysis only; see also Van Gelder, 1978:8, who placed this species in genus Canis , subgenus Vulpes .
