TYPE LOCALITY: Chile, Santiago Prov .
DISTRIBUTION: From Tierra del Fuego along the Andes of Chile and Argentina, the highlands of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.
COMMENT: Subgenus Dusicyon or Pseudalopex ; see Cabrera, 1958:230; Van Gelder, 1978:7. Pseudalopex has been considered a synonym of Dusicyon by Cabrera, 1958:229, and Clutton-Brock et al., 1976, 29(3): 166; a subgenus of Dusicyon by Langguth, 1969, Z. Wiss. Zool., 179: 176; a subgenus of Canis by Langguth, 1975:193, and Van Gelder, 1978:7. Includes culpaeolus (part) and inca (part), mismatched skin and skull; see Langguth, 1967, Neotropica, 13:21-28. AL considers Pseudalopex a distinct genus. Type locality restricted by Cabrera, 1931, J. Mammal., 12:62.
