TYPE LOCALITY: Sweden, Uppsala .
DISTRIBUTION: North America south to 20° N., in Oaxaca ( Mexico); Europe; Asia, including the Arabian Peninsula and Japan; not in the Indochinese peninsula or southern India.
COMMENT: Probably ancestor of and conspecific with the domestic dog, familiaris, (RGVG); familiaris has page priority over lupus in Linnaeus, 1758, but both were published simultaneously, and lupus has been universally used for this species. Extinct in much of its former range (AL). Reviewed by Meeh, 1974, Mamm. Species, 37:1-6.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as C. lupus (Indian, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Nepal populations only).
CITES - Appendix II (all populations not listed on Appendix I) U.S. ESA - Endangered, 48 conterminous states (other than Minnesota) and Mexico. U.S. ESA - Threatened, Minnesota populations only.
