DISTRIBUTION: N. E. Argentina and Paraguay south to the Straits of Magellan.

COMMENT: Includes castaneus; see Kipp, 1965, Z. Saugetierk., 30: 193-232; but also see Corbet and Hill, 1980:98, who list castaneus as a distinct species.

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as C. humboldti (sic).
