TYPE LOCALITY: Mexico, Veracruz, Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Achotal .
DISTRIBUTION: S. Arizona and S. W. New Mexico, south through Mexico (except Baja California), Central America, and South America (except Chile) to Argentina.
COMMENT: Includes narica ; see Handley, 1966, in Wenzel and Tipton, eds., Ectoparasites of Panama, p. 789. Includes aricana, boliviensis, candace, cinerascens, dorsalis, maniuni, montana, quichua, solitaria, and vittata ; see Cabrera, 1958:244-249, and Hall, 1981:975-976.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix III as N. n. solitaria subspecies only ( Uruguay).
