DISTRIBUTION: Afghanistan; Pakistan; N. India; China; S.E. Primorsky Krai ( U.S. S. R.); Korea; Japan; Indochina.
COMMENT: Placed in genus Ursus , subgenus Selenarctos by Gromov and Baranova, 1981:249; and in subgenus Euarctos by Thenius, 1979:293. Stains, 1967, in Anderson and Jones, p. 331; Corbet, 1978:165; and Hendey, 1980:98, considered it a distinct genus, Selenarctos .
