This relatively speciose, primarily neotropical genus presently contains approximately 37 species with several known subspecies. Thyanta was initially studied by Ruckes (1952, 1957c, d) but it was later revised, in two parts ( Rider & Chapin 1991, 1992). Another important work on the North American species of Thyanta is that by Ruckes (1957a). Rider & Chapin (1991) divided the genus into three subgenera: the nominate subgenus, Argosoma Rider , and Phacidium Breddin , although all three could probably be raised to full genus status.
