Type: Agriophyllum arenarium M. Bieb. ex C. A. Mey. (≡ A. pungens ), the only species originally included in the genus by Marschall von Bieberstein (1819) and Meyer (1831).

Protologue: “Habitat in arenosis aridissimis deserti Comani et Caspici. Rudolph. Prof. chirug. [a typo—should be “chirurg.”—S.M. & M.S.] Petropoli.” ( Vahl 1805: 17).
