Neobarombiella vittigera ( Weise, 1912) comb. n.

( Figs 72–75)

Monolepta vittigera Weise, 1912: 93 .

Barombia quadrilineata Laboissiere, 1921: 287 syn. n.

Total length. 5.15–8.25 mm (mean: 6.32 mm) (n=18).

Head. Frons and vertex yellow to brownish-yellow, often with medial, black, semi-triangular spot on vertex. Labrum, labial and maxillary palpi yellow to brownish-yellow. Antenna yellow at base, becoming brownish to brown towards terminal antennomere ( Figs 72), sometimes with annulate appearance when base of each antennomere is paler than apical section; length of second to third antennomere 0.62–0.73 (mean: 0.67), and length of third to fourth antennomere 0.64–0.69 (mean: 0.66). Eyes very large and ovate, protruding distinctly ( Fig. 72), width of eye to interocular distance 0.56–0.65 (mean: 0.61).

Thorax. Pronotum yellow to brownish-yellow, glossy, very minutely punctuated; very broad and strongly trapezoidal; pronotal width 0.90–1.42 mm (mean: 1.08 mm), pronotal length 1.74–2.80 mm (mean: 2.16 mm), and pronotal length to width 0.47–0.53 (mean: 0.50). Elytron slender, glossy, coarsely punctuated, yellow, each with dark brown to black medial longitudinal line and another parallel to outer margin; entire elytron finely margined with black; elytral length 4.00– 6.20 mm (mean: 4.91 mm), elytral width 2.60–3.90 mm (mean: 3.19 mm), and maximal width of both elytra to length of elytron 0.62–0.71 (mean: 0.65; Fig. 72). Meso- and metathorax brownish-yellow. Femur yellow, tibia and tarsus yellowish-brown or entirely brown, and length of basi-metatarsus to metatibia 0.48–0.55 (mean: 0.52).

Abdomen. Entirely yellow or brownish-yellow.

Male genitalia. Median lobe slightly enlarged apically; apex with broad V-shaped incision in ventral view; single pair of distinctly sclerotized, parallel ridges ventrally, each with slight sub-apical protrudence; endophallic brush with single pair of long, slender, and strongly sclerotized spiculae ( Fig. 73).

Diagnosis. Neobarombiella vittigera can easily be distinguished from most other Neobarombiella species by its lined elytra. Yellow elytron with black longitudinal lines are only found in N. bilineata , N. pictipennis , N. lineata sp. n. and N. reichartzi sp. n. These four species can be distinguished by having a single black line, whilst N. vittigera has a second lateral line, running parallel to the outer margin of each elytron ( Figs 30, 72, 121, 161, 177). Since elytral colour patterns are highly variable in these beetles, other characters should be examined to effect a reliable identification. Characteristics of the median lobe will allow differentiation between these species ( Figs 73, 122, 162, 178). The antenna of N. reichartzi sp. n. are more slender than those of N. vittigera ( Figs 72, 74, 177, 179). Although these two species occur sympatrically, the pronotum is on average longer and more slender in N. vittigera , pronotal length to width 0.47–0.53 (mean: 0.50), and 0.43–0.48 (mean: 0.45) in N. reichartzi sp. n. ( Figs 72, 177). Neobarombiella lineata is much smaller than N. vittigera , with a total length of 2.90–5.05 ( N. vittigera 5.15–8.25), its second and third antennomere are sub-equal in length, length of second to third antennomere 0.75–0.83 ( N. vittigera 0.62–0.73) ( Figs 72, 74, 161, 163), and it has much smaller eyes, width of eye to interocular distance 0.40–0.47 ( N. vittigera 0.56–0.65). The antennomeres in N. pictipennis are longer and far more slender, length of second to third antennomere 0.78 (0.62–0.73 in N. vittigera ); length of third to fourth antennomere 0.75 (0.64–0.69 in N. vittigera ) ( Figs 31, 74). Neobarombiella bilineata is very similar to N. vittigera , but can be recognized by its smaller and more widely separated eyes, width of eyes to the interocular distance 0.56–0.65 (0.41–0.48 in N. vittigera ) and its longer and more slender pronotum, pronotal length to width 0.53–0.57 (0.47–0.53 in N. vittigera ) ( Figs 72, 121).

Distribution. Central and east Africa, recorded from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola eastwards, as far as Burundi in the North and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, in the South ( Fig. 75).

Type material examined. Monolepta vittigera . Type material of this species is not known to us, but the identity of this very characteristic species can be derived from Weise’s detailed description.

Barombia quadrilineata . Lectotype, female: “Museum Paris, Angola, Benguéla, Capelongo-Dongo, Mission Rohan-Chabot, 1914 / Barombia , quadrilineata, m., V. Laboissière – Dét. / Type / AfriGa, specimen ID:, 1241, specimen data, documented, 20.IX.2004 ” ( MNHN; Fig. 76). Since Laboissière recorded two different collecting sites it can be inferred that he based his description on more than one specimen. Two specimens are available in the MNHN collection and a lectotype is here designated. Type locality: Angola, Benguela, 12°34’S / 13°24’E GoogleMaps .— Paralectotype: the other specimen with the same label data as the lectotype is a paralectotype ( MNHN) GoogleMaps .
