Macroglenes samurai sp. nov.

Etymology. The species is named for its long ovipositor, like a samurai sword.

Diagnosis. Body black, without metallic reflections; clypeal margin not incised (cf. Figs 1–2); F5 large, with sensilla (cf. Fig. 33); mesosoma clearly convex (cf. Fig. 10); pecten regular, about 2/3 length of hind tibia (cf. Fig. 14); forewing with basal cell bare (cf. Fig. 35) and small bare area between R and apical margin; ovipositor sheaths only slightly shorter than hind tibia; hypopygium reaching about 4/5 length of gaster (Fig. 30).

Description. Female.

Body length. 1.3 mm.

Color. Body black, without metallic reflections. Eye pale red. Antenna brown. Mandible light brown. Legs brown, tarsi yellowish with the last segment darker. Tegula and venation brownish, wings hyaline.

Head. In frontal view about as high as wide. POL about 1.8X OOL. Eye height about 1.4X length. Malar space about 0.4X as long as eye height. Scape shorter than eye height; combined length of pedicel and flagellum slightly shorter than head width; pedicel length in lateral view about 1.8X width; F1–F4 anelliform, without sensilla, F1–F3 more compacted together; F5 large, with sensilla, width about 1.4X length; clava length about 2.2X width.

Mesosoma. Length about 1.4X width, clearly arched dorsally, scutellum and propodeum making a distinct angle. Mesosoma length about 1.7X height. Forewing length about 2.3X width, basal cell bare, with only 4 hairs next to basal vein; speculum narrow, reaching R; M:R:P = 25:5:3; stigma moderately large, about as long as wide; with small bare area on the upper side between R and apical margin. Pecten regular, about 2/3 length of hind tibia.

Gaster (Fig. 30). Elongated, length without ovipositor sheaths about 2.5X width and about 1.2X as long as mesosoma. Ovipositor sheaths only slightly shorter than hind tibia. Hypopygium reaching about 4/5 length of gaster.

Male. Unknown.

Material examined. HOLOTYPE (Ψ): JAPAN: ‘ JAPAN: Honshu, Iwate, Mt. Hayachine 500 m, 21. VI. 1989 M. J. Sharkey, sweep’ ( CNC).

Comments. Together with M. caudatus sp. nov., M. eximius (Haliday) and M. paludum (Graham) , the new species is one of the few Macroglenes having a very long ovipositor. Thus, it probably parasitizes hosts deeply concealed in plant tissues.
