Sobarocephala eurystylis View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs 9–11 View FIGURES 6 – 11 )

Type Material. Holotype male ( BPBM 17243), Malaysia, Pahang, Kuala Tahan, 12–14. XII. 1958, T. C. Maa.

Diagnosis. This species is unique in having the mesoscutum and pleura largely black, a pair of brown anterolateral bands between the postpronotal lobes and the transverse suture, and a broad surstylus with dense setae.

Description. MALE. Head yellow, frons slightly brown tinged; ocellar triangle brownish black; gena whitish tomentose. Antenna yellow, first flagellomere with small brown spot surrounding base of arista on outer side, arista black; palpus yellow. Thorax brownish yellow; mesoscutum sparsely gray pollinose, weakly shining, black behind transverse suture but indistinctly divided by brownish dc-lines (in anterior 1/5, as long as length of dark area), median part of dark area extending anteriorly before transverse suture as stripe (in about posterior 2/3, as long as distance between anterior margin of scutum and suture), and with pair of brown anterior bands obliquely laterad of median stripe between postpronotal lobes and transverse suture, these bands extending to notopleura; scutellum and pleura from anepisternum to mediotergite brownish black. Wing very faintly infuscated anteroapically; calypter pale yellow, with margin dark brown and fringe pale brown; halter yellow. Legs yellow (fore legs missing). Abdomen brownish black, pollinose, weakly shining, but T1 pale brown, S8 brownish yellow; epandrium black. Bristles brown to black.

Frons twice as wide as eye, slightly converging ventrally; second or shorter than first or, third or longer than first or; oc long, subequal to poc; facial carina distinct except for ventral part; gena 1/5 as high as eye; pm five. First antennal flagellomere 3/4 as long as wide, with distinct pile; arista densely plumose on basal half but sparse apically, with longest pubescence about 1/3 as long as width of first flagellomere; palpus narrower than genal height, setulose apically.

Mesoscutum with two dc, six rows of acr, sa halfway between two dc; scutellum with lsc shorter than asc. Wing 2.8 mm long; three costal sections in proportion of 35: 10: 6, r-m slightly beyond mid level of cell dm, M1 ratio 4.5, ultimate section of CuA1 more than 1/2 as long as penultimate section (12: 20). Mid tibia with dp and one spur.

Epandrium ( Figs 9, 10 View FIGURES 6 – 11 ) with surstylus broadly lobate, almost as high as epandrium, densely setigerous on outer and inner sides (about 40 setae on inner ventral part stronger, somewhat spine-like); cerci united; proctiger weakly chitinized, V-shaped. Hypandrium of normal shape, pregonite narrowly chitinized, with two setulae; postgonite membranous, with several setulae. Phallapodeme ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 6 – 11 ) 340 µm long; phallus 190 µm long, mesophallus shorter than basiphallus, distiphallus largely membranous, with narrow sclerites on lateral sides; paraphallus chitinized at base but membranous and serrated along distal margian, diverging distally; ejaculatory apodeme 70 µm long.

Body length 3.1 mm.

FEMALE. Unknown.

Distribution. Malaysia (Peninsular).

Remarks. This new species is similar to Sobarocephala hirsutiseta ( Frey, 1928) which also has a plumose arista and vittate mesoscutum, but differs distinctly from it in the characters stated in the key (couplet 8). Also, it is similar to the Japanese Sobarocephala uncinata Sueyoshi, 2006 , known from the Ryukyus, in the shape and setation of the surstylus, but differs in the coloration of the thorax and in the genitalic structure: in S. uncincta , the scutellum and mediotergite are brown in their central parts only, the anepisternum is brown on the dorsal and anterodorsal margins, the surstylus is more densely setose on the inner side, and the paraphallus is provided with a claw-like process distally ( Sueyoshi 2006: figs C, D).

Etymology. The specific name refers to the broad surstylus (Greek: eurys + stylis).
