In its present delimitation, Afropachyiulus accommodates blind Pachyiulini with 2–4 frontal setae, with or without metazonital setae, unmodified male mandibles, spoon-shaped (or “club-shaped” in Verhoeff’s terminology) anterior gonopods with 1–2 apical denticles, and posterior gonopods having distinct mesomerital and opisthomerital processes (as the processes of the posterior gonopod are not fully separated, we prefer the terms mesomerital process and opisthomerital process rather than mesomerite and opisthomerite). The genus may be subdivided into three species groups:
