varicosum View in CoL . Cerithium . Handmann, 1883a [non Brocchi, 1814, non G.B. I. Sowerby, 1834]
see Tiaracerithium pictum (de Basterot, 1825)
* Cerithium varicosum View in CoL n. f.— Handmann 1883a: 172 [non Brocchi, 1814].
Type material. The syntypes of Handmann (1883a) were stored in the Kollegium Kalksburg in Vienna, a Catholic private school, but seem to be lost .
Type locality. Berndorf (St. Veit an der Triesting) ( Handmann 1883a) .
Stratigraphy. Middle Miocene, Badenian.
Discussion. According to the brief diagnosis in Handmann (1883a), he had specimens of Tiaracerithium pictum at hand with strongly gradate spire. The name Cerithium varicosum is preoccupied by Brocchi (1814) and G.B. I Sowerby (1834). As we consider Cerithium varicosum Handmann, 1883a as a subjective synonym of Tiaracerithium pictum , no replacement name is needed.
Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Berndorf ( St. Veit an der Triesting ) ( Mariani & Papp 1966) .
