* Potamides sumbarensis View in CoL nov. sp. — Kolesnikov 1950: 93, pl. 12, figs 1 – 3.
Type material. Holotype, PIN No 2722/29, SL: 18.4 mm, 5.3 mm, Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
Type locality. Sumbar River ( Turkmenistan) .
Stratigraphy. Late Pliocene/Pleistocene, Akchagylian.
Discussion. Kolesnikov (1950) established this name for slender shells with subcylindrical whorls and prominent beads. This morph is reminiscent of Potamides disjunctus (J. de C. Sowerby, 1832) but the huge stratigraphic gap of about 6 my makes a closer relation unlikely. Therefore, we interpret P. sumbarensis to be an atavistic morph of Potamides caspius , with which it co-occurs.
Eastern Paratethys. Akchagylian (Late Pliocene/Pleistocene): Caspian Basin: Chatma Lowland, Kvabebi, Nazarlebis-khevi ( Georgia) ( Dzhikiya 1977); Eldari Steppe area, Naftalan, Palantekyan Mountain Ridge ( Azerbaijan) ( Kolesnikov 1950); Danata, western spurs of the Kopet Dag, Small Balkhan, Sumbar River ( Turkmenistan) ( Kolesnikov 1950; Ali-Zade 1967, 1969).
