Discussion. It is very unlikely that the specimen from the Ukrainian Miocene is conspecific with Cerithium lemniscatum Brongniart, 1823 , which was described from the Bartonian (Eocene) of Italy (syntype MNHN.F.J03877, stored in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris, France). Most probably, Pusch (1837) had a Mesohalina margaritacea ( Brocchi, 1814) at hand, which is reminiscent of the Eocene species. Mesohalina margaritacea , however, does not occur in the Middle Miocene of the Ukraine but is abundant in all collections due to exchange. Thus, this record seems to represent a misplacement, which was not unusual in the collection of Pusch [see also the erroneous record of Campanile giganteum (hoc opus) and of a recent Tridacna (see Harzhauser et al. 2008)].
