( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 1 – 24. 1 )
Desmotricha josioides Zerny, 1931b: 20 (Taf. 1, fig. 26). Lectotype hereby designated, male: [ BRAZIL], Santa Catarina, Jaraguá (Fr. Hoffmann). Male syntype with two labels: printed label “Sta. Catharina, Jaraguá, Fr. Hoffmann” with date handwritten on the underside “ 10.xi. ’29” and handwritten label “ Desmotricha josioides Zerny ♂ type ”. One paralectotype, female with same labels, but the date is “ 20.xi. ’29”.
Current combination. Desmotricha josioides Zerny, 1931 .
Condition of the types. Lectotype. Wings slightly rubbed. Right hindwing damaged below discal cell. Abdomen with a hole dorsally on second tergite. Paralectotype. Head missing. Wings rubbed and slightly damaged. Abdomen partially eaten by pests. Most legs missing. Despite this extensive damage, the specimen is still recognizable as D. josioides .
Remarks. Desmotricha josioides was described from the two specimens mentioned above. This species seems to be closely related to the type species of the genus, Phalaena ursula Cramer, 1781 . This core concept of Desmotricha seems to also include the following species: D. trita ( Dognin, 1911) , D. metapolia ( Dognin, 1912) , D. klagesi Rothschild, 1912 , D. perplexa Rothschild, 1912 , D. hoffmannsi Rothschild, 1912 , and D. oceola Dyar, 1910 . Although the remaining species are not as similar in habitus as those listed above, they are not as divergent from the type species as is common in many genera of Ctenuchina and Euchromiina or Arctiinae in general—groups that suffer from what Watson (1971: 1) called “a seemingly almost arbitrary generic classification”.
