Colobostema valentinae View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 C, 2C, 3C, D, 4E, F, 5C, 6C, 7C)

Type material. HOLOTYPE male, labeled: MEXICO, Jalisco, Estación Biológica de Chamela, Cuenca 1, 10–15- Feb-1993, Malaise trap 8/318, Rodríguez, P. A. col. Specimen dissected and mounted on microscopic slide, deposited in CAIM. Paratype female, same data, except, 23–28- Dec-1992, Malaise trap 9/329.

Diagnosis. Flagellum short; M constricted medially (wing male); tergite 7 simple, not modified; lateral margin of gonocoxite with crenulations, parameres bearing setae as long as paramere length.

Description. Male. Head dark brown. Eyes with interommatidial spicules; antenna with 8 flagellomeres ( Fig.1 View FIGURE 1 C) brown; first flagellomere subquadrangular, flagellomeres 2 to 7 broader than long, distal flagellomere club-shaped; flagellum length, 0.42 mm; palpus not observed (detached); labella light brown, short and rounded. Thorax brownish; scutum covered with short setae; anterior spiracular sclerite with 29–30 setae; anepisternum and anepimeron with scattered setae; two katepisternal setae. Legs brownish; femora uniformly brown, tibiae annulated, with narrow basal and apical pale rings on all tibiae; tarsi pale brown. Wing ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C) length, 1.2 mm, width, 0.60 mm; membrane densely micropilose on whole surface. Anterior veins R1, Rs and R4+5 broadened and thickened, with irregularly arranged rows of short setae on dorsal surface; costal cell narrow; C length 0.8 of total wing length; r-m very short; fork of M symmetrical, constricted medially; M1 and M2 incomplete; false vein faint; CuA1 ends beyond level of apex of C; CuA2 markedly sigmoid. Halter brown, with five setae on stem. Abdomen: sternite 7 (Fig. 4F) with broad posteromedian emargination, length, 0.16 mm, width, 0.43 mm; posterior margin of tergite 7 (Fig. 4E) nearly straight, not modified, length, 0.10 mm, width, 0.40 mm. Genital capsule massive ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 C); gonocoxite short and robust, with pointed apex, lateral margin with crenulations, length, 0.1 mm, width, 0.06 mm; paramere ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 C) bearing comb of dense and long setae; penis elongate, sinuous medially, length, 0.1 mm; tergite 9 ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 C) V-shaped, apex with pair of short and strong teeth-shaped projections, length, 0.08 mm, width at base, 0.17 mm.

Female. Similar to male, except for the following differences. Head. Flagellum brown, length, 0.36 mm; palpus ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 C) pale brown, pyriform with apical sensory pit, length, 0.04 mm. Wing ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D) length, 1.3 mm, width 0.6 mm; membrane densely micropilose on entire surface; C extending 0.69 of total wing length. Abdomen sternite 7 simple, posterior margin nearly straight, length, 0.65 mm, width, 0.20 mm; tergite 7 with shallow Vshaped posterior emargination, length, 0.45 mm, width, 0.19 mm. Sternite 8 medially divided, with pair of posteriorly directed appendages bearing 8 setae (4 setae on inner margin, 1 seta on external margin subapical and two setae at apex); cerci large, covered with macro- and microsetae. Spermatheca oval, hyaline, 0.11 mm long, 0.07 mm wide, neck sclerotized.

Discussion. The male of this species is distinguished from all other previously described of Neotropical Colobostema by the parameres bearing longer setae (as long as the paramere length), the gonocoxites with crenulations and the short flagellum. The tergite 7 of female differs from the structure in other species by the shallow V-shaped posterior emargination; C. varicorne (Coquillett) has a deep median cleft on posterior margin and C. variatum Cook has tergite 7 slightly emarginated posteriorly. Appendages of sternite 8 in C. valentinae bear 8 setae (4 setae on inner margin, 1 subapical seta on external margin and two setae at apex), while C. variatum Cook , has 3 or 4 setae on inner margin and 2 or 3 at apex, in C. varicorne (Coquillett) , has one basal seta on inner margin, one subapical and one apical setae).

Distribution. Mexico (Jalisco).

Ecology. Specimens were collected using Malaise trap, in a tropical dry forest, at the elevation of 20 m. GPS Coordinates: 19° 31´38´´N; 105° 4´24´´.

Etymology. The new species is named in honor of my daughter, Myia Valentina Huerta Trujillo , for being a princess in my life.
