FAMILY IGUANIDAE Bell 1825 , 206

(2 genera, 7 species, 3 endemic species). Oppel 1811, 16 is usually credited with authorship of this family name, but Nicholson et al. (2012) argued that Oppel’s usage of “Iguanoides” did not qualify as required by the CODE and those authors cited Gray (1827, 56) as the author. Bell (1825, 204) had previously used Iguanidae for a marine iguana from the Galapagos; that publication was overlooked by Nicholson et al. (2012).

Ctenosaura Wiegmann 1828 , col. 371 (6 species, 3 endemic species)

Ctenosaura bakeri (E) Stejneger 1901, 467

Ctenosaura flavidorsalis Köhler & Klemmer 1994 , 197

Ctenosaura melanosterna (E) Buckley & Axtell 1997, 139

Ctenosaura oedirhina (E) de Queiroz 1987, 892

Ctenosaura quinquecarinata (Gray 1842, 59). Examination of recently collected specimens from the type locality of C. praeocularis Hasbún & Köhler (2009, 197) and a large series recently collected in adjacent Choluteca and El Paraíso, Honduras, reveal that they are morphologically identical to those Ctenosaura from adjacent Nicaragua identified as C. quinquecarinata by Hasbún & Köhler. There are no physical or geographical barriers separating those Nicaraguan populations from those of southern Honduras (known Nicaraguan populations separated by only 20 km from nearest known Honduran locality). That issue will be discussed in more detail in McCranie (in prep.; the non-dactyloid lizards, crocodyles, and turtles of Honduras).
