Peltonotus rubripennis Miyake and Yamaya

( Figs. 32 View FIGURES 31–36 , 46a–c View FIGURES 46–48 , 60 View FIGURES 56–60 , 65 View FIGURE 65 )

Peltonotus rubripennis Miyake and Yamaya 1994: 42–43 , fig. 7–8. Holotype female at Yamaya Collection (Nigata, Japan) labeled a) “Mt. Trus Modi, 1200 m alt., S.W. Slope Sabah, V.1991, N. Kobayaski leg.,” b) Holotype Peltonotus rubripennis Miyake and Yamaya. Miyake and Yamaya (1994) named this species based on a single female specimen.

Description. (males=2; females=2). Length 12.0– 12.5 mm. Widest width 6.2–6.9 mm. Color: Head, pronotum, scutellum, elytral suture, apical margin of elytra, lateral margins of elytra, propygidium, pygidium, and venter castaneous; disc of elytra brown. Dorsal surface with obvious iridescent bloom. Head: Surface of frons with base sparsely punctate, disc and apex moderately densely punctate; punctures simple, unisetigerous; setae minute. Surface of clypeus moderately densely punctate; punctures simple, unisetigerous; setae minute or short (laterally). Clypeus laterally weakly bowed, apex truncate, corners square, beaded; bead weakly arcuate posteriorly. Labrum broadly emarginate at middle. Mandible with external edge rounded, inner apex with 2 teeth. Mentum with apical half rounded, notched at middle; palpomere 2 not dorsoventrally flattened, about 1.5 times width of palpomere 1, lacking abundant setae. Maxilla: mala with lacking lamellate setal brush; stipes with sparse, moderately long, simple setae (not flattened or curly at apex); palpomere 2 without internomedial bump. Antennal club slightly longer than segments 2–7. Pronotum: Bad lacking anterior to scutellum. Surface moderately densely punctate; punctures simple, lacking setae. Lateral margin lacking long setae. Elytral sutural length: About 3.4 times length of scutellum. Elytra: Surface with 5 poorly developed, punctate, longitudinal striae between suture and humerus; punctures ocellate, moderate in size, moderately dense, lacking setae. Intervals similarly sculptured. Epipleuron of female in ventral view not expanded, not incised at apex; in dorsal view expansion moderately developed adjacent to metacoxa ( Fig. 60 View FIGURES 56–60 ). Propygidium: Surface shagreened and moderately densely punctate (base) to sparsely punctate (disc and apex), punctures simple, lacking setae. Pygidium: Surface moderately densely punctate; punctures ocellate, lacking setae. Venter: Prosternal keel elongate; apex projecting anteriorly at about 90° with respect to ventral plane, produced to about 1/2 of protrochanter, truncate or rounded at apex. Legs: Foretibia of male tridentate (basal tooth very weakly developed) ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 31–36 ); lateral margin with short, dense setae. Foretarsomere 5 of male subequal in length to tarsomeres 1–4, thickened; foretarsomeres 2–4 with apices expanded, dorsal and ventral apices of tarsomeres 2–4 clothed with dense, short setae. Foreclaws of male with inner claw broadly curved, about 3 times thicker than outer claw; outer claw elongatearcuate, about 1/2 the length of inner claw; empodium bulbous at base. Foreclaws of female 1/2 length of foretarsomere 5, claw angled toward venter. Meso and metatibial claws of male with 2 setae, claw angled toward venter, about 3/4 length of metatarsomere 5. Metatibia of male with apical spurs nearly straight; ventral spur produced to apex of metatarsomere 1, dorsal spur apex of metatarsomere 2. Parameres: Fig. 46a–c View FIGURES 46–48 .

Diagnosis. Peltonotus rubripennis is separated from other species of Peltonotus by the following characters: entire dorsal surface with iridescent bloom; female epipleuron simple ( Fig. 60 View FIGURES 56–60 ); labrum broadly emarginate at middle; mentum with apical half rounded, palpomere 2 not dorsoventrally flattened, about 1.5 times width of palpomere 1; maxilla lacking lamellate setal brush, stipes with sparse, moderately long, simple setae (not flattened or curly at apex), and palpomere 2 without internomedial bump; and antennal club slight longer than segments 2–7.

Distribution ( Fig. 65 View FIGURE 65 ). Sabah State and Sarawak States, Bornean Malaysia.

Locality records (4 specimens) from WADA, FUJI, MNHN, BMNH .

Natural History. Recorded from 1000 and 1400 m elevation.

Remarks. Miyake and Yamaya (1994) compared P. rubripennis with " P. malayensis Arrow from Sumatra ". Because P. malayensis does not occur in Sumatra, it is possible that they were comparing it with either P. gracilipodus or P. sisyrus .

Male and female specimens in the type series were collected in different localities. Although the collecting localities are widely separated, we associated the male and female based on speciesspecific characters such as the form of the mentum (apex and palps) and maxilla (palp, stipes, and mala) as well as dorsal coloration (pronotum castaneous, elytra brown) and small size. Males and females of this species are similarly colored. Peltonotus rubripennis and P. vittatus are the smallest species in the genus, each being about 12 mm in length.

One female specimen in our series was erroneously identified by G. J. Arrow as P. vittatus .
