Myrovernix glandulosus (Less.) Koekemoer View in CoL comb. nov.
Basionym:— Elytropappus glandulosus Lessing (1832: 343) View in CoL .
Type:— SOUTH AFRICA. Western Cape. Tradouw, February, Mundt & Maire s.n. (P!, lectotype, designated here).
Multi-stemmed, copiously branched, woody shrubs, up to 0.6 m tall, variably glandular, from very densely glandular and sticky, to having a few scattered glands on young leaves; very glandular plants yellowish-green, whereas those with very few glands, greyish; surfaces very variable: from glabrous to white-woolly on leaves, stems and involucre; distinctly aromatic, sweetly resinous. Branches mostly erect to spreading-erect. Leaves glandular, generally adpressed, at least along some branches, patently spreading on other branches, occasionally spreading up to 90 degrees, usually straight, but occasionally twisted or curling sickle-shaped; gland stalks short, stubby, heads about twice the diameter of the stalks. Synflorescence a terminal spike up to 90 × 7 mm, occasionally much shorter, 10–20 mm long, occasionally a panicle with a few side branches toward the base of the inflorescence. Capitula homogamous, discoid, 2- or 3- flowered, rarely with 2 fully developed florets and one sterile floret; sessile, solitary or in small groups in leaf axils; subtending leaf as long as or longer than capitulum length. Receptacle small, conical. Involucral bracts 8–10, often angled as a result of being pressed against the stem by adpressed subtending leaves; outermost bracts 3 or 4, scale-like, broadly winged, foliaceous along the midrib, apex shortly mucronate; innermost bracts acuminate to mucronate. Disc florets plum-red, up to 3 mm long, tube very often curved, lobes spreading slightly. Cypselas ± 1 mm long, indistinctly ribbed, annulus poorly developed. Pappus setae 15–17, slightly fused at the base, barbed in lower fifth, plumose upwards, plumes ascending. Flowering February to May.
Diagnostic features: —Narrow, spike-like inflorescence, leaves mostly adpressed, capitula 2- or 3-flowered.
Conservation status:—Least Concern (http://Redlist.sanbi.org).
Distribution:— Western Cape. Sandy soils at elevations from 1 000–2 000 m. Figure 11 View FIGURE 11 .
