Dacnochilus compactus ( Casey, 1905) View in CoL

Acalophaena compacta Casey 1905: 146 View in CoL .

Paederopsis gloydi Kistner 1955: 1 View in CoL . New synonym.

Dacnochilus compactus View in CoL : Jiménez-Sánchez and Galián 2013 (redescription).

Type Material. Paratype (female, FMNH, head mounted on separate slide): “ Wickenburg : Maricopa Co., Ariz., 28.VIII.51/ light trap / Coll. H.K. Gloyd, leg./[female symbol]/mouthparts on slide P-1/ Paederopsis gloydi Kistner Paratype [red label]/ FMNHINS 4087760, FIELD MUSEUM, Pinned [QR code label]/ Dacnochilus compactus (Casey) Det. A. Brunke 2021 .

Note on Type Material. Paederopsis gloydi was described based on a female holotype and two female paratypes. We examined one of the female paratypes, which corresponded well to the description by Kistner (1955) and displayed the following character states: disc of pronotum and elytra without macrosetae; elytron with epipleural carina; head (from description) and pronotum concolorous pale red-brown; pronotum very transverse (approximately 1.60 times wider than long). We therefore conclude that this species belongs in Dacnochilus and is morphologically indistinguishable from D. compactus, sensu Jiménez-Sánchez and Galián (2013) , who studied a female syntype from Arizona.

Diagnosis. This species can be easily recognized among Nearctic Dacnochilus by a combination of: uniformly red body; labrum with paired teeth; elytra without discal rows of punctures; elytron with epipleural carina.

Distribution. United States: AZ, CA, NV. Mexico: Baja California.

Comments. When describing P. gloydi, Kistner (1955) was apparently unaware of the distinctive genus Acalophaena (now a synonym of Dacnochilus ). An examination of the type material showed that this species was identical with D. compactus . Therefore, the genus Paederopsis is removed from the Nearctic fauna, though an examination of the Brazilian type species is needed to confirm whether this genus is a synonym of Dacnochilus .
