Diagnosis. This species is easily distinguished (except from Ho. rubripennis , known only from South Dakota) by the combination of obsolete hind angles of the head, head with few, sparse punctures, epipleural line long and extending from near humer- us to near apex of elytron, elytra near suture varying from entirely reddish to darkened in a softly defined area ( Fig. 3E View Fig ). Casey (1905) gave rather slight dif- ferences between Ho. cribratus and Ho. rubripennis and no identified specimens of the latter were available to us. All material listed was compared with the photos of the syntype of Ho. cribratus in the MCZ.
Distribution. Canada: NB, ON, QC. United States: CT [new record], IL, IN, MA, MD [new record], NC [new record], NJ, NY [new record], PA [new record], VA.
Comments. This species is broadly distributed in northeastern North America ( Newton 2019) and is here newly recorded from Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania.
