Coelichneumon clypeatus ( Uchida, 1955) View in CoL

Protichneumon clypeatus Uchida, 1955: 97 , ♀.

Holotype: ♀ “[Syoyozan], 1941 VI. 15 ” (Sapporo), type studied. Missing: 4 th and 5 th right mid tarsomeres, 5 th left mid tarsomere, left flagellomeres from 5 th on. Right hind leg and right antenna glued on card.

Non-type material: 1 ♀, Hokkaido, Biei Town, Chubetsu , 7.vii.1980, K. Maeto leg. ( NIEAS) ; 1 ♀, Hokkaido, Otaru City, Mt. Kenashi , 9–10.vii.2002, A. Yamamoto leg. (Kanagawa) .

Description: ♀: Body length 15 mm. Flagellum with 42 flagellomeres, moderately lanceolate, 1 st flagellomere 1.6× longer than wide; 2 nd flagellomere 1.4× longer than wide, combined length 0.49× eye length; 7 th flagellomere square, widest flagellomeres c.2.0× wider than long. Temple moderately and roundly narrowed behind eye. OED 1.25× ocellar diameter. Frons finely rugose-punctate. Face densely punctate, centrally rugose. Clypeus with dense punctures, smooth. Gena with dense punctures ventrally, 1.1× wider than eye. MI 0.7.

Mesosoma covered with brownish hairs. Mesoscutum with dense punctures, smooth between punctures. Mesopleuron punctate. Metapleuron punctate; juxtacoxal carina present. Scutellum slightly elevated, about as long as wide, with dense punctures, without lateral carina. Area superomedia heart-shaped, slightly longer than wide; anterior transversal carina absent. Area externa punctate, finely granulate. Hind coxa densely punctate, densely pilose, without scopa. Hind femur densely punctate, 3.2× longer than wide; 3 rd mid tarsomere 1.5× longer than wide. Areolet pentagonal, frontal distance between veins 2rs-m and 3rs-m 2× their width; vein 2m-cu slightly distad its middle. Vein 1cu-a postfurcal by 1× its width.

Lateral field of postpetiolus punctate, 0.35× as wide as median field, median field rugose-punctate, indistinctly striate. Gastrocoelus large, with ridges; thyridium slightly oblique, 0.8× as wide as the interval. 2 nd tergite 1.25× wider than long. 2 nd and 3 rd tergites very finely and densely rugose-punctate, area between thyridia with weak striation. 7 th tergite 1.2× wider than long. Seen from dorsal, ovipositor sheath c.0.6× as long as 7 th tergite.

Color: Black. Ivory are flagellomeres 8–12 and narrow frontal orbit. Mandible reddish centrally. 1 st tergite except narrow black base and 2 nd and 3 rd tergites red. Legs blackish; tibiae and tarsi reddish; hind tibia infuscate in apical 0.2; 4 th and 5 th hind tarsomeres ± infuscate. Wings with slightly brownish tint; pterostigma ochreous. ♂ unknown.

Remarks: This species resembles Coelichneumon haemorrhoidalis (Gravenhorst, 1820) which has also been reported from the Eastern Palaearctic region ( Riedel 2012), but differs by its less strongly lanceolate flagellum, slightly slenderer basal flagellomeres, reduced striation on postpetiolus and 2 nd tergite, mainly red 1 st tergite and brownish instead of pale hairs on mesosoma. From the European Coelichneumon torsor (Thunberg, 1822) , it can be differentiated by its less strongly lanceolate flagellum, black apical tergites and reduced striation on postpetiolus and 2 nd tergite. It is not impossible that Coelichneumon clypeatus represents a Japanese subspecies or form of one of these taxa. This is the first record of this species from Japan.

Distribution: Japan (Hokkaido) and Korea.
