scientific name

Crivoptychoptera
status

gen. nov.

Genus Crivoptychoptera gen. nov.

Type species. Crivoptychoptera nebrias sp. nov. ( Fuchsberg , Germany, Tr 3).

Etymology. Arbitrary combination of “crivo” and the generic name Ptychoptera .

Composition. Monotypic.

Diagnosis. Medium sized wing with numerous dark spots on crossveins and furcations; Sc, R 1 and Rs long: Sc ending beyond wing midlength; R 1 ending beyond 2/3 wing length; Rs originating before 1/3 wing length; R 3 and R 4 curved forward distally, crossvein r-m close to Rs furcation; supernumerary crossvein connecting R 5 and M 1, four medial veins, M 1+2 fork subequal to M 3+4 fork, crossvein im connecting M 2 and M 3.

Remark. The new genus is similar to the Mesozoic Eoptychoptera Handlirsch, 1906 and Cretaceous Leptychoptera Lukashevich, Azar, 2003 in the set of veins and im position, but only Leptychoptera —in direction of R 4, is distinguished from the latter in longer Sc, R 1 and Rs as well as in larger size and presence of spots on wings. Supernumerary crossvein between R 5 and M 1 is unique in the family, however it isn’t clear if this character is stable or aberrant (see Discussion).
