( Figs 15, 16 View FIGURES 1−24 , 34, 38 View FIGURES 31−38 , 79, 80 View FIGURES 79−82 , 88, 89 View FIGURES 83−94 , 96 View FIGURES 95−98 , 99 View FIGURE 99 )
Podaena dentipalpis Ordish, 1984: 14 View in CoL , figs 18, 26, 54, 80, 109.
Differential diagnosis. Male ( Fig. 99 View FIGURE 99 ) body length (taken from anterior margin of labrum to elytral apex) 1.85 mm; female body length 1.95 mm. Males are distinguished from those of all other species by the palp having a small distal groove on the third (penultimate) palpomere ( Figs 15−16 View FIGURES 1−24 ), associated with a toothshaped expansion best seen on the lateroventral view ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 1−24 ). The second palpomere has rows of long setae similar to those of P. moanaiti ( Figs 3−4 View FIGURES 1−24 ), but in the latter species there is no tooth-shaped expansion. The male foretibiae are short and wide, with a marked lateral expansion and a reduced constriction of the distal half ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 31−38 ) and tibial spines inserted very close together ( Fig. 38 View FIGURES 31−38 ). The male foretibiae of P. dentipalpis are closest to those of P. obscura and P. trochanteralis ( Figs 32−34, 36−38 View FIGURES 31−38 ), but there are subtle differences that may assist in their separation. Male genitalia ( Figs 79−80 View FIGURES 79−82 ) with more than the distal half of the main piece and the distal lobe very unsclerotized, transparent and with a variable morphology. Very similar to the genitalia of P. obscura , P. kuscheli and species of the P. latipalpis complex. Females very close and difficult to separate from those of these latter species. With the exception of P. kuscheli , the spermatheca of P. dentipalpis ( Figs 88−89 View FIGURES 83−94 ) is morphologically indistinguishable from the spermatheca of those species.
Note. The left foreleg of P. dentipalpis was figured by Ordish (1984: 44, fig. 54) in its posterior aspect, not “anterior as stated in the legend to his figs 54−66 ( Ordish 1984: 45).
Distribution. As in Fig. 96 View FIGURES 95−98 . Widely distributed over the South Island, where it is one the most frequently collected species. In this paper, we report new records for Mid Canterbury (MC), Mackenzie (MK) and South Canterbury (SC).

Note. As shown in Table 1, a comparison of paratype numbers given by Ordish (1984: 14) and our counting of the material available shows that there is a surplus of 6 paratypes of P. dentipalpis . However, this surplus is the balance between the totals, regardless of greater discrepancies among the numbers of males and females (see Table 1).
