Diagnosis. The species is distinguished from congeners by the short wide tegmen (see measurements in Tables 5–6).

Bioacoustics. Within a song unit, low-amplitude beginning and ending phases consists of repeated simple syllables, high-amplitude climax is complex and composed of several repeated subunits. One subunit consists of 3 variable-amplitude syllables ( Fig. 1 a–e).

M. niponensis is is widely distributed in the subtropics of China (extending west-southward to Yunnan, northward to Henan), eastward to Korea and Japan.
