Mahonia sphenophylla (Unger) Doweld , comb. nov.
≡ Ilex sphenophylla Unger (1847: 148, pl. 50, fig. 9 (lower left)). = Quercus aspera Unger View in CoL (1847: 108, pl. 30, fig. 2), nom. illeg. non Quercus aspera Bosc (1807: 328) View in CoL ≡ Quercus sclerophyllina Heer (1855:
54) ≡ Mahonia aspera Kovar-Eder & Kvaček in Kovar-Eder et al. (2004: 57), nom. superfl.— Type: [fossil leaves] Parschlug, Styria,
Austria (lectotype designated by Kovar-Eder et al. 2004: 57, LMJ 76529, Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Austria). Type:—[fossil leaves] Parschlug, Styria, Austria (holotype, LMJ 76515, Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Austria).
Occurrence:—Miocene; Europe.
IFPNI: 77611852-6DEA-8B70-8DA9-BB7F874E5A78.
Notes:—The fossil-species Mahonia aspera Kovar-Eder&Kvaček was incorrectly published as a new combination, being based on the illegitimate homonym, Quercus aspera Unger (1847) non Bosc (1808), used previously for the extant species. However, Mahonia aspera Kovar-Eder & Kvaček is a nomenclaturally superfluous name of the previously published replacement name, Quercus sclerophyllina Heer (1855) . Since Ilex sphenophylla Unger (1847) is the earliest available name for this fossil Mahonia foliage (see Kovar-Eder et al., 2004), having precedence over Quercus sclerophyllina Heer (1855) , it is transferred to Mahonia here.
