Description ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 10–23 )
Body length 3.1 mm. Bristles yellow (including bristles on basal section of costa). Acrostichal bristle present. Scutum yellow with well defined cruciate pattern. Scutellum and laterotergites brown. Pleuron light yellow with brown stripe from dorsal margin of anepisternum to anteromedial face of katepisternum. Coxae white. Legs yellow in part; fore femur brown excluding tip, or yellow with median dorsal spot; mid and hind femora brown excluding yellow apex and wide white base, or entirely yellow; tibiae brown excluding apex and base, or entirely yellow with mid and hind tibiae browned medially; tarsi white. Head yellow in part; frons brown centrally (more so anteriorly); first flagellomere black; dorsal half of face light brown; palpus, lower half of face, buccal cavity and gena black; ocellar spot brown. Abdomen dark brown with tergite 1 yellow and cerci and surstylus white. Wing dusky on distal 1/3, darkest around R 2+3; distance between crossveins distinctly wider than posterior crossvein.
Female
As described for C. pollostos female except as follows: frons darkest along anterior margin, or evenly dark across entire surface excluding lateral margins (never yellow); palpus yellow; clypeus always brown; face black along dorsal and ventral margins; first flagellomere with faded infuscation on innerventral face of first flagellomere (usually) or around entire segment (occasionally); sometimes buccal cavity black and/or mid femur with faint median band.

Externally as described for C. pleuralis except emargination on cerci narrower and surstylus 2/3 as long and narrowest at tip. Hypandrial complex as described for C. pleuralis except posterodistal margin of pregonite more setose and anterior lobe more pronounced.
Etymology: The specific name refers the shape of the surstylus, which resembles a claw.
Distribution: Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru (Map 5).

Comments: Craspedochaeta chela can be separated from other species with a cruciate notal pattern by a small, hooklike surstylus, and a black first flagellomere in the male. It also differs from similar species in that the face and legs are at least partially brown.
