Steneotarsonemus Beer 1954: 1229 . Type species by original designation: Steneotarsonemus hyaleos Beer, 1954 .
Mites of the genus Steneotarsonemus live primarily on monocotyledons, such as: leaf sheath and flower panicles of Gramineae (grass, sedges, bamboo, rice), pineapple, and bulb scale of various Amaryllidaceae View in CoL and Marantaceae View in CoL . Over 70 species of this genus in six subgenera have been described worldwide ( Lin & Zhang 2002).
In New Zealand, only one species, Steneotarsonemus spirifex (Marchal) , was recorded previously ( Martin 1983). In this paper, we describe two new species of Steneotarsonemus , one belonging to the subgenus Neosteneotarsonemus and the other to the subgenus Mahunkacarus . Both subgenera are new records for New Zealand.
