Metalimnobia (Metalimnobia) quadrimaculata ( Linnaeus, 1760) View in CoL
Limonia annulus truncata: Kim, 1971: 664 View in CoL –665 (synonymy not certain, because specimens were not located by the authors).
Diagnostic features. General body color varies from brown to yellowish brown. Body length of male 12.7–17.8 mm, that of female 13.7–16.3 mm. Wing length of male 17.1–21.6 mm, that of female 14.5–16.2 mm. Prescutum polished with four distinct longitudinal dark brown stripes. Median lines come together posteriorly, making very extended “V“-shaped figure.
Abdominal tergites semi-polished, dark brown with obscure yellow fronto-lateral spots. In lighter specimens yellow spots are larger, thus dark brown remains as median triangle. Seventh and eight male tergites entirely dark brown. Sternites yellow with dark brown lateral margins, sternites 3–7 with transverse brown sutures on posterior margin, eight sternite mostly brown to dark brown with two small yellowish spots on frontal margin. Outer gonostylus of male genitalia ( Figs. 7, 9 View FIGURES 6 – 11 ) sickle-shaped, tip acute. Paramere ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 6 – 11 ) with cushion of setae at apex. Cercus of ovipositor ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 12 – 14 ) straight, tip blunt-apexed.
Elevation range. Altitudes from slightly above 400 m to more than 1300 m.
Period of activity. Adults are flying at least from mid-May through the beginning of September. It is possible, that they start even at late April and are active through the end of September, but the earliest and the latest specimens were captured with Malaise traps, which were at the spot for a long time.
Habitat. Adults were collected in wet deciduous and mixed forests, usually not far from streams.
General distribution. Species is widely spread in whole Holarctic.
