Type designation. Holotype male with the following label data: Costa Rica: Prov. Heredia, F. La Selva, 3 km S Pto. Viejo, 10°26'N 84°01'W, 4.iv.1985, beating, H. A. Hespenheide, INB0003645878. Allotype female labeled as follows: Costa Rica, Heredia: Est. Biol. La Selva, 50–150 m, 10°26'N 84°01'W, Mar 1993, INBio­OET, 5 Mar 1993, Carapa guianensis [ nicaraguensis ], FOT/02/23, INBIOCRI001230865.

Size range. Male: 3.2 x 1.1 mm to 3.6 x 1.4 mm; Female: 3.6 x 1.3 mm to 4.0 x 1.5 mm.

Description. Male: Head longer than wide, punctures very small, widely spaced; gena much shorter than ½ longitudinal diameter of eye; eyes large; longitudinal diameter of eye subequal to length of rostrum; frons slightly narrower than rostral base. Rostrum shorter than head, distinctly widened beyond antennal insertions; width at apex twice as wide as frons. Antennae inserted at middle of rostrum; antennal club longer than funicle; segment 1 of funicle ovo­globose, distinctly shorter than scape; segments 2–6 subequal, slender, weakly clavate, slightly longer than segment 1; segment 7 wider, more cylindrical, shorter than segments 2–6; basal segment of club slightly shorter than middle segment; terminal segment distinctly shorter than basal or middle segment. Pronotum longer than wide, dorsally flattened, moderately punctured; punctures more or less weakly impressed; distance between punctures equal to or less than diameter of puncture. Elytra almost twice as long as wide, widest at apical third; striae distinct and similar throughout; intervals weakly convex, narrower than striae; row of semi­erect setae on strial interspaces; row of erect setae on intervals; next to last strial row joins last strial row near apex. Female: Same as male except rostrum distinctly longer than head, strongly arcuate, width at apex subequal to width of frons; antennae inserted just behind basal 1/3 of rostrum; frons wider than width of rostral base.

Color. Male: Body and antennae orangish to yellowish brown; sides of pronotum and ventral base of head blackish­brown; elytra with blackish brown pattern in basal half setting off a circular to oval pale area at the base of each elytron, elytral pattern sometimes weakly defined. Female: Same as male but elytral pattern more distinct; sometimes with a dark spot at the declivities of each elytron or with the entire elytral apices dark.

Comments. The type series consists of 10 specimens. Eugnamptus sarapiquensis is easily distinguished by the unusual color pattern of the elytra. The broad apex of the parallel­sided pedon bears two small widely spaced acute denticles ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7 – 12 b) and the TA is small and very similar to the type found in E. pusillus , E. herediensis and E. bellus . This species and E. laticeps are the only species collected with black light traps. It was also collected by fogging C. nicaraguensis and by hand collecting with beating sheets.

Name derivation. The specific name refers to the Rio Sarapiqui which runs along the northern portion of La Selva.
