Eugnamptus laticeps Voss 1941: 185
Type locality. Costa Rica.
Type holder. ZMHB
Lectotype designation. The label data for the two female syntypes (cotypes) are as follows: (1) cotype [circular label with yellow border], cotype [upside down, rectangular label], Costa Rica, Turrialba, 1930 515 [upside down label], Eugnamptus laticeps ; (2) Eugnamptus laticeps var. ( ZMHB). The first mentioned female is designated as lectotype.
Size range. Male: 3.5 x 1.3 mm to 4.3 x 1.4 mm; Female: 3.7 x 1.4 mm to 4.7 x 1.8 mm
Description. Male: Head longer than wide, with small widely spaced punctures; frons about ½ as wide as rostral base, weakly foveate; gena ½ shorter than ½ longitudinal diameter of eye; longitudinal diameter of eye subequal to rostrum in length. Rostrum shorter than head, distinctly widened beyond antennal insertions; width at apex slightly wider than twice the width of frons. Antennae inserted just behind middle of rostrum; club slightly shorter than funicle; segment 1 of funicle ovoglobose, slightly shorter than scape; funicle segments 2–4 cylindrical, slender, slightly longer than funicle segment 1; funicle segments 5–7 subequal, slightly shorter than funicle segments 2–4; basal and middle segments of club subequal in length; terminal segment of club slightly shorter than basal and middle segments. Pronotum longer than wide, densely punctured; punctures nearly touching. Elytra about twice as long as wide, widest at apical third; striae strongly impressed, distinct throughout; intervals narrower than width of striae, weakly convex; double row of semierect setae associated with strial interspaces; single row of erect setae along intervals; next to last strial row joins last strial row at middle. Female: Same as male except rostrum longer than head; rostral width at apex slightly wider than frons; antennae inserted at basal 1/3 of rostrum; frons slightly wider than rostral base.
Color. Male: Body pale brown to reddish brown with darker brownish markings; antennae, legs and abdomen somewhat paler; vertex of the head and the pronotum with darker brownish middorsal longitudinal marks; head and thorax with darker ventral areas; elytra brownish throughout with some small dark areas at humeri and lateral base.
Female: Same as male except elytra with large blackishbrown areas at base and at lateral apices ( Fig.14 View FIGURE 14 d).
Comments. Eighty specimens of E. laticeps were examined. The species is recognized by the brownish to reddish brown body and the darker brown markings on the head and pronotum. The apex of the short parallelsided pedon is flattened and broadly rounded and the elongate and apically trifid TA ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 6 b) aligns it with E. sulcicollis and E. rostralis . This species was collected in Malaise traps and from the following five tree species during fogging events: V. koschnyi , H. didymanthera , Guarea sp., P. m a c ro l o b a and M. vernicosa .
