Description: —Plant perennial, glabrous, forming a sub-shrub 15–75 cm tall, with several erect stems and a robust tap-root. Caudices 1.5–5.0 cm long, branched, leaves in rosettes at apices. Leaves fleshy, dark green, normally flat, 5–40 cm long and 1–9 cm broad, more or less narrowly oblanceolate, elliptic or obovate, apex obtuse to acute, mucronate, with one central nerve and many clearly visible pinnately branching lateral nerves, gradually tapering into the petiole. Stems 10–70 cm long, rugose, nearly straight to slightly flexuous, branching begins above the lower third of the stems. Inflorescence corymbose or obtrullate in outline. Sterile branches absent or very few, 1–5 cm long. Fertile branches 5–28 cm long, straight to slightly curved, directed obliquely upwards, forming branching angles of 40°– 65°, longer branches in the upper half divided. Spikes 8–35 mm long, straight to curved, erect to directed obliquely upwards. Spikelets 4.5–6.0 mm long, composed of 2–4 flowers, often very densely arranged with 5–10 per cm. Outer bract 1.3–2.1 mm long and 1.4–2.2 mm broad, triangular-ovate, acute; bract margin broadly membranous; central part slightly fleshy, sometimes only at the base, acuminate. Middle bract membranous, 1.9–2.7 mm long and 1.6–1.8 mm broad, triangular-ovate to trapezoid, asymmetrically emarginate. Inner bract 3.8–4.3 mm long and 2.4–3.4 mm broad, elliptic to obovate, on the upper end premorse and emarginate; bract margin broadly membranous; central part fleshy, green, oblong, on the upper end premorse, emarginate. Calyx obconical, 3.9–5.0 mm long, exceeding the inner bract by 0.8–2.0 mm; calyx tube sparsely to densely long hairy; with 5 ribs ending at the base of lobes; calyx lobes ca. 0.3–0.9 × 0.7–1.2 mm, triangular, often with small intermediate lobes; calyx seam very plicate. Corolla blue to violet.

Chromosome number: —2n = 36 ( Erben 1978, Artelari 1984a, b, 1992, Georgakopoulou et al. 2006; Erben Li–892, Li–1739, Li–1740, unpubl.).

Distribution: —Throughout the Mediterranean region. L. narbonense occurs in the Greek regions of Makedonia, Sterea Ellas, Attika, Thessaly and the Peloponnese. It is also found on the islands of Chios, Donousa, Euboea, Kerkyra, Kos, Limnos, Milos, Naxos, Paros, Samos, Skiathos and Thirasia ( Fig. 94G View FIGURE 94 ).

Habitat: —Salt marshes, rocky coast.

Taxonomic remarks: —Apart from its chromosome number (2n = 36), L. narbonense can be distinguished from its allied species in Greece ( L. pagasaeum , L. brevipetiolatum , L. compactum and L. hirsuticalyx ) by the shape and size of its spikes and spikelets. The hybrid L. narbonense × pagasaeum was found in the western part of the Pagasitikos Gulf (Sinus Pagasaeus). This hybrid has a habit that is intermediate between the two parent taxa, longer spikelets than either parent, and a chromosome number of 2n = 54 ( Georgakopoulou & al., 2006; Erben = Li–1741, unpubl.). L. narbonense is considered to be the Mediterranean geographical vicariant of L. vulgare , which has a typical North Atlantic distribution. Not only do the two species share a similar habit, they also have the same tetraploid chromosome complement.
