28. Limonium cephalonicum Artelari View in CoL (1984a: 57 et 1984b: 28) ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 )

Type:― GREECE. Ionian Islands: Ins. Kephallinia: ad Castrum pagi Assos ; in saxosis calcareis, maritimis, 9 October 1982, Artelari 376 (holotype UPA, isotypes C!, Herb. Erben!) .

Description: —Plant perennial, glabrous, scabrous-tuberculate, forming a sub-shrub 10–35 cm tall, with many ascending to erect stems and a robust tap-root. Caudices robust, 3–10 cm long, branched, living leaves in rosettes at apices. Leaves fleshy, rigid, 5–40 mm long and 1–7 mm broad, narrowly oblanceolate-spathulate, apex obtuse or slightly emarginate, margin revolute, with one central nerve, gradually tapering into the petiole; sometimes at anthesis leaves mostly withered. Stems 5–30 cm long, often papillate-hairy near the base, numerous, more or less slender, articulate, flexuous, very fragile at the nodes, slightly scabrous, branching begins near the base. Inflorescence corymbose. Sterile branches several, 0.5–2 cm long, articulate, slightly flexuous. Fertile branches numerous, 2–6 cm long, articulate, fragile at the nodes, flexuous or arched, confined to the upper third, forming branching angles of 45°–80°, very branched. Spikes 5–20 mm long, straight to arched, inserted erect to obliquely; axis of the spike often flexuous; sometimes spikelets solitary arranged at the ends of the branches. Spikelets 5.5–7.0 mm long, composed of 1–2 flowers, arranged with 3–4 per cm. Outer bract 1.2–1.7 mm long and 1.7–2.2 mm broad, transverse triangulate to semi-circular; bract margin broadly membranous; central part fleshy, acuminate. Middle bract membranous, 1.7–2.3 mm long and 1.7–2.1 mm broad, broadly obovate-elliptic, rounded. Inner bract 4.2–5.0 mm long and 3.2–3.5 mm broad, elliptic, obtuse to rounded; bract margin widely membranous; central part fleshy, dotted, 3.2–4.0 mm long and 1.8–2.3 mm broad, oblong, acuminate, forming a narrowly triangular tip, 0.8–1.0 mm long, nearly reaching the upper margin. Calyx 4.9–5.5 mm long, exceeding the inner bract by 1.2–1.8 mm; calyx tube sparsely, shortly hairy, with 5 ribs ending shortly above the base of lobes; calyx lobes ca. 0.8 × 0.9 mm, semi-elliptic. Corolla violet.

Chromosome number: —2n = 18 (Artelari 1984a, b).

Distribution: —Confined to the west coast of Kefalonia ( Fig. 89C View FIGURE 89 ).

Habitat: —Calcareous rocky coast.

Taxonomic remarks: —This species is related to L. damboldtianum , from which it differs by having nearly glabrous stems much more articulate stems, narrower branching angles and shorter spikes.
