Diagnosis. Body elongate, compressed; tail long, tapering to caudal fin, completely enveloped in a soft gelatinous tissue. Head large, slightly compressed, covered with thick gelatinous tissue, forming a gelatinous snout. Dorsal-fin rays 8–10. Pelvic-fin ray long, extending beyond base of pectoral fin. Pelvic-fin consisting of one elongated ray and several rudimentary rays attached to front of the base of the long ray; some vestigial rays inside a thin cutaneous membrane on the medial side of the base.
Distribution. Indian and western Pacific oceans ( Smith 1986; Moore 2003; Kulbicki et al. 1994; Bray & Hoese 2006; Aizawa & Doiuchi 2013)
