Diagnosis. Carapace less than 1/3 of total length, integument calcified, covered by small denticles. Lateral horns behind the level of the eyelobe, large and forward directed. Uropod peduncle shorter than half length of the endopod, with some simple and plumose setae on inner face. Endopod uniarticulate, as long as exopod.
Description. Ovigerous female, 4.95 mm total length. Carapace ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 A) less than 1/3 of total length, integument calcified, covered by small denticles. Eyelobe rounded, pseudorostral lobes meeting in front of the eyelobe for an equal length of the eyelobe. Lateral horns behind the level of the eyelobe, large and forward directed.
Antennule ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 B), peduncle triarticulate, article 1 as long as article 3 and slightly longer than article 2; main flagellum biarticulate, very short, with one aesthetascs distally.
Mouthparts: mandible ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 C) with 13 setae between pars incisiva and pars molaris. Maxillule ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 D), inner endite with four acuminate and one serrate setae. Maxilla ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 E), endites exceeding the protopod, with simple and serrate setae. Maxilliped 1 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 F), basis produced distally and with seven plumose setae on inner margin; carpus with seven flattened setae on inner margin. Maxilliped 2 ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 A), basis longer than the rest of appendage with two long plumose setae distally; carpus longer than merus, with plumose setae on inner margin. Maxilliped 3 ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 B), basis short, as long as the following three segments combined length, distal part produced into a long, narrow, curved process reaching beyond the merocarpal articulation, with a row of setae on inner margin; ischium shorter than merus, with four plumose setae on inner margin; merus produced distally; carpus longer than propodus; propodus and carpus slender.
Pereopods: pereopod 1 ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 C), basis slightly longer than the three following segments combined length, produced distally beyond the end of ischium into a pointed process; carpus slightly longer than propodus and more than twice as long as dactylus. Pereopod 2 small ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 D), basis shorter than the remaining segments, ischium fused, with the basis. Pereopod 3 and 4 similar ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 E, F), basis longer than rest of appendage with plumose setae on margins and one simple seta on distal corner; merus as long as carpus; carpus and propodus with one long simple seta on distal corner; dactylus shorter than its distal seta. Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 G), basis shorter than rest of appendage merus as long as carpus; carpus and propodus with one long simple seta on distal corner; dactylus shorter than its distal seta.
Uropod peduncle with four plumose setae on inner margin ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 H), shorter than half length of rami. Both rami of the same length; endopod with eight plumose and three acuminate setae on inner margin, its tip with a setulate seta; exopod biarticulate with two plumose setae on inner margin of the article 2, its tip with two curved setulate setae.
Adult male 5.2 mm total length. Carapace very different than in female ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 A), with a lot of small circular depressions, a 1/3 of total length and twice as long as deep, with two lateral horns behind the level of the eyelobe; eyelobe better developed than in female, with several lenses.
Antennae: antennule ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 B), peduncle triarticulate; article 1 longer than article 3 and about twice long as article 2; main flagellum biarticulate, very short, with one aesthetascs on article 1 and a longer one on article 2. Antenna ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 C), peduncle articles 4 and 5 with rows of sensorial setae on its ventral face.
Pereopods: pereopod 2 ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 D), ischium fused with the basis, basis as long as the following three articles combined lengths; merus carpus and propodus of similar length; dactylus longer than propodus with four setae terminally and two setae on the margins.
Uropod peduncle shorter than half length of the endopod ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 E), with some simple and plumose setae on inner face. Endopod uniarticulate, with several plumose and microsetulate setae on inner margin. Exopod biarticulate, as long as the endopod, with plumose setae on dorsal and ventral margins and a pair of curved serrate setae on the tip.
Remarks. Specimens from the Persian Gulf agree with the description of Kurian (1951). Only small differences were observed in the orientation of the lateral horns that could be due to the relative position of the carapace.
Distribution. South coast of India ( Kurian 1951) and Persian Gulf, between 23 and 28 m depth.
